Sage Ralston is ecstatic when she is hired by big firm Boylston Electronics. True, she’ll only be an office assistant, but it will be to the big boss himself, Charles Boylston.
But Sage is in for a surprise. The office assistant front is a just that, a façade. The real job will have Sage spying on the employees of the company and reporting directly to the head honcho himself. Someone is sabotaging the company, and Charles wants to know who it is. His suspicions are aimed at Connor Michaels, a woman who works in the research lab. Sage’s job will be to unmask Connor’s treachery, and this will imply befriending the woman and fishing for all her secrets.
Sage is uneasy about this whole business, and while pretending to be friends with Connor, discovers the two of them can really have a chance at friendship. Sage is convinced Connor is not the one responsible for selling company secrets. Teaming up with her new friend, she’ll do everything to unmask the real culprit.
I admit I expected a fast pace and lots of spy-thriller-like action in this one. The experience was not exactly that. The book, mind you, is anything but slow, and the twists and turns of the plot had this reviewer going, Why didn’t I think of this one? A lot of the happenings in this story are planted so precisely and quietly that you never see it coming until it hits you in the face. Thumbs up to Ms. Droney on this aspect!
Another part which made this book a refreshing read in the genre, is the slant on Sage’s age. Sage is no worldly woman out to tackle the universe. She is young, naïve, and sometimes so candid you want to push and prod her in the right direction, especially where her love life is concerned. Sage does come across as a very sweet and likeable character throughout though. The inclusion of Sage’s family’s dynamics also helped fuel the story and provided another story within a story, in a way.
Overall, a definite good read. There is something for everyone. Thrills, chills, romance, and relationships in all its diversity.
